TUPE Resources
These are additional TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) Resources.
CA Healthy Kids Survey
The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is administered county-wide, every other year and is supported by TUPE funds.
- Last CHKS survey was done during the 2017-18 school year
- Next CHKS survey will be done in 2019-20
For LCAP purposes, Districts may administer the CHKS during “off” years. There are two options for this:
- Administer the full CHKS survey – TUPE pays
- Administer the “mini module” – District is responsible for payment
County-wide, district-level and state-level data are available for all previous CHKS survey years. Contact Anna Hanisko for more information.
Tobacco and Marijuana Crossover
Tobacco smoke and marijuana smoke share a very similar toxicity profile and both pose significant risks to the developing brains of adolescents. The co-use of marijuana and tobacco is common amongst California youth, over 60% of marijuana users are also concurrent tobacco users. Cannabis products, especially flavored products, are advertised heavily to youth using the same tactics tobacco companies have used for decades. Since the legalization of recreational marijuana in 2016, there has been a decrease in youth’s perception that marijuana can be harmful to their health, which is discordant with the available science. For these reasons, and more, decades of tobacco prevention successes are being applied to the prevention of youth marijuana use.
