California Healthy Kids Survey
The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is administered county-wide, every year and is supported by TUPE staff. The CHKS is a modular, anonymous survey. The core survey is focused on the 5 most important areas for guiding school and student improvement and substance-use data:
- Student connectedness, learning engagement/motivation, and attendance;
- School climate, culture and conditions;
- School safety, including violence perpetration and victimization/bullying;
- Physical and mental well-being and social-emotional learning; and
- Student supports, including resilience-promoting developmental factors (caring relationships, high expectations, and meaningful participation).
The CHKS core survey provides data that meets the reporting criteria for the LCAP Priority 6.
In addition, there are supplemental modules that cover a variety of other subjects in more detail, that can be added if desired, such as:
- School climate;
- Social-emotional and physical health;
- Behavioral health and substance-use; and
- Other risk behaviors.
Districts may also add the California School Staff Survey’s and/or the California School Parent Survey’s to their annual CHKS core survey.
County-wide, district-level and state-level data are available for all previous CHKS survey years. Contact the Coordinator of Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) for more information at (530) 842-8417.
