Health Education

Health Education is a free educational service provided to all schools in Siskiyou County. Lesson series are available for Grades K-4, middle school, and high school students. The Coordinator of Health Education has designed and developed lesson presentations and teaching guides for teachers, school nurses, and/or other facilitators who plan to deliver health education in the classroom. These lessons meet California Health Education Content Standards, and have been vetted by the California Department of Education.

Fall

Safety First Curriculum - Middle School and High School

Safety First is a comprehensive drug education and intervention lesson series created by the Stanford REACH Lab. This 5-lesson series provides a harm-reduction approach to prevention education around alcohol, opioids/fentanyl, and other drugs. The purpose of this curriculum is to encourage youth to abstain from substance use, and to provide middle and high school students with scientifically accurate information to empower them to quit and/or reduce harm.

Health Promotion Campaigns - County Wide

Red Ribbon Week - October 23-31, 2026 

The Red Ribbon Campaign began in 1985 following the tragic murder of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. NFP launched the initiative to raise awareness about the devastating impact of drug abuse in America. Today, Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s largest and longest-running drug prevention campaign, encouraging communities to take a stand for healthy, drug-free lifestyles.

Walk, Bike and Roll - October 7, 2026     

Walk n Roll is a fun school-sponsored event that encourages students and staff to walk, bike, or roll to school. Walk n Roll events help advocate for improved safety for all, promote a healthy lifestyle, and connect the community through active transport.

Health Education Lessons

Grades K-2: Healthy Body, Healthy Life                                                   

 Healthy Body, Healthy Life is a health education series that is available to students in Kindergarten - 2nd grade. The lessons cover topics related to infection/illness prevention, healthy dental habits and behaviors, nutrition (K-2nd grade), and bike and road safety (1st grade). 

Grade 3: Healthy Social Behaviors   

This lesson series will teach 3rd grade students about why it is important to practice respectful behaviors every day. Lesson 1 will dive into the definition of respect, how to practice respect and consideration, and will define the Golden Rule. Lesson 2 will have students demonstrate their understanding of how to show respect and consideration for others through role play. Lesson 3 will have students identify trusted adults and how to ask a trusted adult for help when they are experiencing mental, emotional, and/or social distress.     

Grade 4 Building Blocks of a Healthy Life   

This lesson series is designed for 4th grade students, and focuses on building foundational knowledge of living a balanced, healthy life. Lesson 1 is centered around balanced eating. Students will learn about essential nutrients, and what different food groups provide for the brain and body.  Lesson 2 emphasizes the importance of online safety, and responsible use of social media. Lesson 3 encourages safety around substances, with an emphasis on abstinence and harm reduction. Students will learn different between medication and illicit drugs.
