Tuberculosis Risk Assessments

California law requires that school staff working with children and community college students be free of infectious tuberculosis (TB). The law that affects schools (AB 1667) became effective on January 1, 2015. This law requires that a face to face TB risk assessment be administered by a health care professional. If risk factors are identified, a TB test and examination must be performed by a health care provider to determine that the person is free of infectious tuberculosis. The use of the TB risk assessment and the Certification of Completion, developed by the California Department of Public Health and the California TB Controllers Association are also required.

The TB risk assessments are done by the SCOE Credentialed School Nurses. The risk assessment must be done every four years in place of the TB skin test. SCOE provides this service for their employees and for the schools who contract for extra nursing time for the assessments.  A skin test is not required unless a risk factor is identified.
