Larry Wehmeyer Project - Frog Pond

The Larry Wehmeyer Environmental Education Area (LWEEA) is an outdoor study area where students are motivated through a hands-on approach to science.  Student learning opportunities include information about wetlands, restoration, native plants and animals, water quality, and what it means to be a good steward of the land.

In November 1976, the Siskiyou County Board of Education acquired 10.57 acres of land located west of Mount Shasta City.  This parcel of land sits just one mile outside the city limits and approximately three miles west of Interstate 5.  The land was acquired for the purpose of developing an outdoor education site.  Larry Wehmeyer, a science consultant employed by the Siskiyou Office of Education, then developed a system of trails and educational stations throughout the area.  Mr. Wehmeyer developed a curriculum emphasizing a “hands-on” approach to science education.  Mr. Wehmeyer retired in 1986 and in 1997, the Siskiyou County Board of Education officially named the site the Larry Wehmeyer Environmental Education Area (LWEEA).
